OEM & Private Label

OEM vs ODM vs Private Label for Dermal Fillers: What’s the Difference?

OEM, ODM and private label are often used interchangeably in international sourcing, but buyers should not assume that every supplier means the same thing by these terms. The important step is to define the actual project scope.

OEM, ODM and private label are often used interchangeably in international sourcing, but buyers should not assume that every supplier means the same thing by these terms. The important step is to define the actual project scope.

What does OEM mean?

OEM generally refers to manufacturing a product for another company under agreed specifications or branding. In dermal filler sourcing, this often includes selecting an existing product profile and customizing packaging under the buyer’s brand.

What does ODM mean?

ODM usually implies a broader development role from the manufacturer. Depending on the supplier, it can involve product selection, packaging development, design support or deeper customization. The exact scope must be confirmed in writing.

What does private label mean?

Private label usually means selling an established product under the buyer’s own brand identity. For many distributors, this is the fastest route because the core product already exists and the project focuses on branding and packaging configuration.

Why terminology matters less than the scope

Two suppliers can both say “OEM” while offering very different services. One may only print a custom box. Another may support labels, syringes, needles, blisters, IFUs and multiple volume formats.

Before comparing quotations, ask each supplier to list exactly what is included.

Questions to define your project

  • Are you selecting an existing formula or requesting new product development?
  • Which product profiles and volumes are required?
  • Which packaging components will be customized?
  • Who provides the artwork?
  • Is a sample or pre-production review included?
  • What is the MOQ?
  • What is the lead time after approval?
  • What documentation is available for the target market?
